Dennis Schroder says the pace of salary growth in the NBA has left him stunned, and he used Dallas rookie Cooper Flagg to make the point.
The 33-year-old Germany point guard, who has earned more than $115m in 13 NBA seasons, spoke on the German podcast OMR Podcast. He compared his own entry into the league in 2013 with the deals handed out now.
"When I was picked 17th, I signed a four-year contract for $7.5m," Schroder said. "Now a player taken at the same No. 17 pick gets $21.5m. Cooper Flagg, as the first pick of the draft, signed a $70m contract before he had even stepped onto an NBA court! I earned that kind of money only by about the age of 23, after I had already proved I could play in this league. He already has it in his pocket. If he plays well, his next extension will be $400m. Another will follow it. This guy can earn a billion dollars in his career from basketball contracts alone. It is simply crazy, but I am sincerely happy for the new generation! If I had been born later, of course I could have got something like that too."
