Monaco Ask Adriatic League to Join Second Division
Monaco, shut out of French competition over financial guarantees, have written to Adriatic League president Ostoja Mijailović seeking an urgent answer on a place.
Monaco have asked the Adriatic League to let them play in it from next season, Meridian Sport reports. The club would first have to be granted a place in the league's second division.
The request follows Monaco's financial problems. The club could not provide the guarantees needed to play in the French championship, and it has been barred from the lower French divisions as well. Monaco have also lost their place in European competition, where Bosna replace them.
According to Meridian Sport, the club's management wrote to Adriatic League president Ostoja Mijailović and asked for an urgent answer. A decision on Monaco playing in the second division as early as this season is expected in the coming days.
The approach follows a run of refusals at home. On 12 September the French federation turned down Monaco's bid for a place in the third division. On 19 September France's Olympic and Sport Committee upheld that ruling, which left the amateur fifth division as the only way to keep any competitive status. A day later Tony Parker said tougher scrutiny from the DNCCG after the Monaco case had stalled the Villeurbanne project.
If the Adriatic League agrees, Monaco would keep a professional schedule outside the French system. If it refuses, the club is left with the fifth division.
