NBA weighs T-Mobile Arena upgrade or new venue for Las Vegas team
Adam Silver says T-Mobile Arena needs major upgrades or a new building is possible for the Las Vegas expansion team, targeted for the 2028/29 season.
The NBA has two arena options for a Las Vegas expansion team: upgrading T-Mobile Arena or building a new venue. The second round of bids for the franchise closed last week.
According to The Athletic, one of the leading bidders is a group headed by Nancy Walton Laurie, a niece of the Walmart founder, and her husband Bill Laurie. Bill Foley, who owns the Vegas Golden Knights, is also in the running.
Commissioner Adam Silver said T-Mobile Arena could be used, but would need major improvements to meet league standards. The alternative is a new building. Silver said Las Vegas has several suitable sites, and called it premature to pick one at this stage.
The league wants the new team playing in the 2028/29 season. Building an arena from scratch would make that date hard to hit.
