Stephen Curry: No drama over new Warriors contract
Warriors guard Stephen Curry, 38, says he will decide on a new deal when he is ready and insists the contract question will not distract the team this season.
Stephen Curry has not decided whether to sign a new deal with the Golden State Warriors, and says the question will not become a distraction. "I don't want any drama. No unnecessary talk. This team has to be competitive and win," he told ESPN.
The 38-year-old guard is under contract until the end of the 2026/27 season. He is eligible to extend for 2 years and a maximum of $136.7m.
"It will happen at the right moment, when I have all the information I need to make the right decision," Curry said. "The team is handling this conversation with me very well. If I don't sign right now, it will have no effect on my game and will not be an extra burden for me. I will decide when I am ready."
According to ESPN, the Warriors offered him several options at once: a maximum extension, a deal for somewhat less that would give the club extra flexibility, or the chance to put the decision off.
"We are in a very interesting situation," Curry said. "Whether I sign the maximum contract or a deal for a smaller amount, I want to play on a competitive team. I want the team to be able to show flexibility, because in recent years we have had practically none."
Curry has played for Golden State since 2009. Last season he appeared in 45 games and averaged 26.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 31 minutes.
