About the player
Álvaro Montero started out in the São Caetano academy in Brazil, but it was in Argentina, at San Lorenzo de Almagro, that he was part of the squad that lifted the 2015 Supercopa Argentina, though he never made a league appearance for the club.
After a short stint at Cúcuta Deportivo, he joined Deportes Tolima, where he became a key player and won two Categoría Primera A titles. His exit from Tolima in 2021 turned sour: the club cut his contract early over dissatisfaction with how his move to Millonarios was handled, drawing public criticism from former teammates.
That form did not hold: 2024 brought heavier criticism after a run of errors. He also won 11 caps for Colombia, though he was left out of the squad for the 2024 Copa América, where the national side finished as runners-up.
In 2025 he moved to Vélez Sarsfield on loan, with a purchase option attached, and won the Supercopa Argentina in his first season there. A year later Vélez triggered that option and sold him on to Boca Juniors on a four-year deal, where he took over the number 1 shirt after wearing 22 at Millonarios and 12 at Vélez.
