About the player
Emma Gaines-Ramos arrived at the Washington Spirit as a college scorer, having left San Diego State with 19 goals and 25 assists across 91 appearances for the Aztecs between 2021 and 2024. She signed a two-year contract with the Spirit from 6 January 2025, complete with club options through 2027 and 2028.
The move to the NWSL did not go to plan straight away. Gaines-Ramos opened her rookie season on the season-ending injury list, watching from the sidelines as the Spirit went on to win the 2025 NWSL Challenge Cup, a title she collected without featuring in the final.
Recovery brought a change of scenery rather than an immediate first-team recall. On 23 July 2025 the Spirit sent her on loan to Tampa Bay Sun FC in the USL Super League for the 2025–26 campaign, a spell that yielded 11 appearances and a single assist before Washington recalled her in January 2026.
Her path into the game began at Rebels SC, where she won the US Youth Soccer National Championship with the club's under-17 side in 2018, and continued with a brief stint in the amateur WPSL alongside her college career, turning out for San Diego Surf SC in 2023. She has yet to be capped by the United States at any level.
