About the player
In the third-place match of the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup against Al-Hilal, with the score locked at 2-2 after extra time, the Monterrey goalkeeper saved two penalties and then stepped up himself to score the winning spot-kick, sealing a 4-3 victory. He was named Man of the Match for the performance.
Cárdenas came through the Monterrey academy, moving up through the club's U17 side before a spell with the reserve team, Monterrey II. He made his senior debut in the Copa MX during the 2013/2014 season, though regular first-team football did not follow immediately. To gain experience, he went out on loan twice, first to Atlético Zacatepec and then to Querétaro, before returning to Monterrey on a permanent basis.
Back at his parent club, Cárdenas became part of a squad that won a string of honours: the Apertura 2019 league title, the Copa MX in 2019-20, and the CONCACAF Champions League in both 2019 and 2021.
At international level, Cárdenas has represented Mexico at youth level, having been called up to the U-22 side for the 2016 CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament, but a senior cap has so far eluded him.
