About the player
When Manchester United set out to become the first Women's Super League club to sign a Mexican international, they landed on Rebeca Bernal Rodríguez . At Monterrey, where she started out in 2017 and stayed until February 2025, Bernal made 274 official appearances and scored 66 goals from the back line, a tally that made her the all-time top-scoring defender in the history of Liga MX Femenil. She captained the club and lifted four league titles with them: the Apertura 2019, Apertura 2021, Clausura 2024 and Apertura 2024.
She went on to help Washington reach the NWSL Championship final in both 2025 and 2026, as well as the final of the 2025–2026 CONCACAF W Champions Cup, though the team came up short in all three, and Bernal added three goals in 44 appearances for the club.
In September 2026 she transferred to Manchester United Women on a three-year contract, a move that made her the first Mexican player to appear in the WSL. On the international stage, Bernal has earned more than 80 caps for Mexico and scored nine goals. Among her honours with the national team, she scored the winning goal in the final as Mexico won gold at the 2023 Pan American Games, and she was also part of the gold medal-winning squad at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. She was later named to the Best XI of the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup.
