About the player
Valentín Lucero left home in 2019 to join River Plate's youth academy after a successful trial. He worked his way up through the club's ranks, from the Quinta División to the Reserva, and in 2024 scored his first goal for the reserve side in a match against Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
A left-footed midfielder who has also featured at left-back, Lucero earned his first professional contract with River Plate, tying him to the club into December 2027. He made his senior debut on 2 August 2026 in the Torneo Clausura against Rosario Central, coming on as a substitute in the 84th minute for Lautaro Rivero in a match River Plate lost 0–1. He got his first taste of continental football soon after, appearing in the Copa Sudamericana against Independiente Santa Fe on 19 August 2026. He added to his single league appearance.
Lucero had already worn the Argentina shirt at youth level. In April 2022, under coach Diego Placente, he started in the final of the Monteigu Tournament in France, where Argentina's under-17s lost 2–1 to Brazil. He has yet to be called up to the senior national team.
