The merger that became River Plate was founded on 25 May 1901, joining two sides, Santa Rosa and La Rosales, in Buenos Aires. The name came from the estuary itself. The club started out in La Boca, but a falling-out with Boca Juniors sent it first to Palermo and then, in 1923, to Núñez, where it has stayed ever since.
The red sash across the white shirt was never planned. During a carnival early in the club's history, players and supporters made off with a long red ribbon, cut it up and stitched pieces onto their jerseys. The nickname Los Millonarios followed decades later, in the early 1930s.
Ángel Labruna spent twenty years at the club from 1939 and left as its all-time top scorer, 317 goals that still stand as the record.
Thirty-eight domestic championships make River the most decorated club in Argentina, spanning the amateur era and the Metropolitano, Nacional, Apertura, Clausura and Liga Profesional formats that followed. The Copa Libertadores has been won four times, when River went on to add the Intercontinental Cup by beating Steaua. Marcelo Gallardo, with fourteen trophies including two Libertadores, is the most successful coach the club has had.
