El Bosque still fills for the Clásico Platense the way it has for well over a century, with Estudiantes across the pitch. Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, known to its own as El Lobo, is the oldest football club still playing in Argentina.

The club began on 3 June 1887 as a fencing and gymnastics society, and its name has drifted along with the city around it. For three years in the 1950s, while La Plata itself was officially renamed Eva Perón, the club carried that name too, before statutes passed in 1964 restored "de La Plata" for good. White and dark blue, arranged as a single central band on the shirt, have stayed constant through all of it.

The ground, formally Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo, sits inside the Paseo del Bosque park and opened on 26 April 1924, designed by the architect Leonardo Tomás Coll. It carries the name of the club president under whom Gimnasia won its only Primera División title, in 1929, beating Boca Juniors 2-1 in the final. A wooden stand there collapsed in 1959; the ground closed again in 2006 over safety concerns and only reopened after a rebuild that ran into 2016. It now holds 30,973. Boca had the last word in 2018, beating Gimnasia in the Copa Argentina final — the only other final of any note the club has reached.

Diego Maradona took charge of the team in September 2019 and stayed until his death in November 2020.
