It opened on 22 April 1951 with a 2-0 win over Huracán, and in 1969 became the first stadium in South America fitted with electric floodlights. Ahead of the 1978 World Cup it was rebuilt again, with new stands taking it to 50 000.
Vélez Sarsfield were founded on 1 January 1910, at a ceremony held in the house of Nicolás Marín Moreno, until the board voted on 23 November 1913 to drop the middle word. The shirt took its final form in 1933: white, with a blue V running from the shoulders down to the chest. It has not changed since.
The club spent 1943 winning the second division. Fifty-one years later it beat São Paulo on penalties for the Copa Libertadores , then met Milan in Tokyo in December 1994 and won 2-0 — the Intercontinental Cup, and the Supercopa Sudamericana in 1996 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 1997, the latter after another shoot-out, against River Plate.
The most recent was the Liga Profesional in 2024, the same year the club took both the Supercopa Argentina and the Supercopa Internacional.
