Willian Andrés Vargas Leon

Willian Vargas has spent much of his career shuttling between Guayaquil City and bigger stages. Born in Guayaquil, he started out at Toreros F.C. before a move to Boca Juniors in 2016.

In 2022 he was part of the squad that won both the Copa Ecuador and the Copa Sudamericana, coming on as a substitute in the second leg of the semi-final against FBC Melgar, a match Independiente won 3-0 on the way to the title.

A second stint at Guayaquil City followed in 2023 before Barcelona SC took him on loan in January 2024 with an option to buy. That switch was interrupted by a loan to Mexico's Mazatlán FC in July 2024, where he made eight appearances and set up a goal, but Mazatlán chose not to exercise the purchase option that December and Vargas returned to Barcelona SC. He has since made ten league appearances for the club, along with one in the Copa Libertadores.

At international level, Vargas represented Ecuador's under-20 side, winning three caps in 2016 and 2017 and reaching the final of the South American U-20 Championship, where he was sent off against Brazil in the group stage. He has not featured for Ecuador's senior national team.
