Almetyevsk

The Yubileyny Ice Palace holds only 2,200, but it has served Neftyanik since 1982 and was rebuilt through 2005 and 2007 rather than replaced.

Almetyevsk itself explains the rest. The team started life in 1965 as Sputnik and took the Tatar ASSR title in its first season; the switch to Neftyanik in 1986 followed the region's oil trade and its dominant employer, Tatneft, whose name still sits behind the club's colours of black, red and white. That link runs further now: Neftyanik is an affiliate of Ak Bars Kazan.

The clearest measure of what the club has built came in 2024, when Neftyanik won the Higher Hockey League and the Vladimir Petrov Cup on home ice, beating its rivals in the final in front of its own crowd rather than on the road. It was the second such title in eight years, after the 2016 Bratin Cup win over Izhstal, and it sat alongside an older run of results — the 1994 Open Championship of Russia, the 2000 Higher League title, the 1979 RSFSR championship as Sputnik — that mark out a club with a long habit of winning below the top flight without quite breaking into it.

Vladimir Tkachyov passed through in the 2012–13 season before his career took him to Ak Bars and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and, eventually, to an Olympic silver medal in 2022, one season among many spent developing players who move on. The derby against HC Chelny from Naberezhnye Chelny still carries the weight of the Tatarstan rivalry, but a KHL place for Almetyevsk itself has never followed.
