The nearest rival worth the name to Omsk is Sibir Novosibirsk, a night's train ride away.

The club itself has worn out five names before settling on the one it keeps now. It started as Spartak in 1950, then became Aeroflot, Kauchuk, Khimik and Shinnik in turn, before Avangard stuck in 1981. The bird on the jersey earned the players their nickname, Yastreby — the Hawks.

For four years the team barely played at home at all. Structural problems closed Arena Omsk, and between 2018 and 2022 Avangard had to stage its "home" games in Balashikha, outside Moscow, until the G-Drive Arena opened with room for just over 12,000.

None of that got in the way of the club's best season. In 2021 Avangard beat CSKA Moscow 4–2 in the final to win the Gagarin Cup for the first time, having lost two previous finals, in 2012 and 2019.

Jaromir Jagr spent three seasons in Omsk, from 2008 to 2011.
