Kazan built its hockey identity around Ak Bars, and everything below the top team exists to feed it. Bars Kazan is the arrangement that lets that happen. It started in 2009 in the Junior Hockey League, and by 2014 had outgrown that level, stepping up to the Supreme Hockey League.

The club has never lifted the Petrov Cup, and its closest run at it came in 2019–20, when it finished seventh in the regular season, knocked out Sokol Krasnoyarsk in the first round, and was into the second before the season was cancelled over the pandemic. Silverware was never really the point, though. The point is names like Artur Akhtyamov, who went from this dressing room to a draft slot with Toronto Maple Leafs, or Nikolai Novoselov, picked up by Colorado Avalanche.

Locally the team is known as Barsy, after the snow leopard on the crest; the "Koshaki" tag belongs to the senior club upstairs, not this one. What sharpens the season is the Tatarstan Derby against Neftyanik Almetyevsk.

Games are played at the Kazan Sports Palace, a ground that holds 3,523.
