In the summer of 2017, Dynamo Moscow had no players. Debts reported at two billion roubles forced the club to release its entire roster and rebuild from nothing.
Founded on 22 November 1946, Dynamo won the first Soviet Championship ever contested that same season, under coach Arkady Chernyshev. Four more Soviet titles followed over the decades, and Aleksandr Maltsev scored 329 goals and 633 points between 1967 and 1984 and had his number 11 retired.
The last of those Soviet titles, in 1990 and 1991, came under Vladimir Yurzinov, who had also played for the club. Two decades later Dynamo went through a merger with HC MVD, playing as United Hockey Club Dynamo Moscow from 2010 before reverting to its own name in 2012 — the same year Alexander Radulov and Marek Kvapil helped the club to its first Gagarin Cup.
The two Gagarin Cups from 2012 and 2013 remain the club's only KHL championships to date.
