Blue Devils

Hamburg's American football scene has never had much room to breathe next to the city's football clubs, but for a stretch spanning the late 1990s and early 2000s, one team from the district stood out. The Blue Devils grew out of the Hamburg Hornets set-up from 1991 and were formally established on 11 January 1992.

What followed was a run that few German clubs in the sport have matched. The Blue Devils took the German Bowl in 1996, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The 2003 title, a 37–36 overtime win over the Braunschweig Lions, capped a rivalry that saw the two sides meet in six German Bowl finals between 1998 and 2005.

Beyond the domestic game, the club became the first in Europe to win three straight Eurobowl titles, in 1996, 1997 and 1998, before losing the next two finals. That period also made the Blue Devils a source of talent for NFL Europe and, further down the line, the NFL itself: Constantin Ritzmann came through the club before becoming the first German-born non-kicker to make an NFL opening-day roster, with the Buffalo Bills in 2004. Kasim Edebali followed a similar path outward, playing for the Saints, Lions and Broncos, before eventually returning to Hamburg to play for the Sea Devils.

Locally, the derby against the Hamburg Huskies has never carried the same history as the Lions rivalry, but it remains the city's own American football fixture. The senior men's team stepped away from the Regionalliga Nord in 2024 for a restructuring, with a return planned for 2025.
