Promotion to Ligue 2 came twice through the same route. Dijon won National, the third tier, in 2010/11. It happened again in 2025, after relegation two years before had dropped the club to National following financial trouble and the loss of its licence.

The current identity traces to 10 April 1998, when Cercle Dijon Football and Dijon Football Club merged under president Bernard Gnecchi, with Nöel Tosi taking the first team. Cercle's own roots went back to 1903 as Cercle Laïque Dijonnais. The ground, Stade Gaston-Gérard, holds 15,459.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played his first senior football at Dijon, in 2008 and 2009. Further back in the record books, Julio Tavares scored more goals for the club than anyone else, and Jordan Marié logged more appearances than any other player to wear the shirt.

Cup football has given the club one real highlight, a run to the Coupe de France semi-final in 2003/04. The academy has had its own moment more recently: the under-18 side reached the Coupe Gambardella final in 2025.
