Grizzlies

The Montana Grizzlies measure a season against one date on the calendar: the meeting with Montana State, a fixture the two programmes call the Brawl of the Wild.

The programme dates to 1897, long enough that its identity has been shaped less by any single season than by stretches of dominance within the Big Sky, which the Grizzlies have won nineteen times, most recently in 2023.

Dave Dickenson quarterbacked the 1995 championship team and left Missoula with the Walter Payton Award, given to the top offensive player in Division I FCS. A decade and a half later, Colin Kaepernick ran the offense before moving on to a professional career that gave the programme a level of national recognition few FCS schools ever get. Jerry Kramer, who blocked for Green Bay in the 1960s, traces his football back to the same university and sits in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Washington–Grizzly Stadium holds just over 25,000, and on Brawl of the Wild weekends the crowd noise is treated as a factor visiting coaches plan around. Maroon and silver have marked the team since well before any of its championship runs.

Montana enters the current Big Sky campaign chasing the conference title it held in 2023, with the rivalry games against Montana State and Eastern Washington shaping the path back to the top of the standings.
