George shared the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season crown in its first season in that league.

The program did not exist until 2006, when Dixie State College, by then already 95 years old, added football as it entered NCAA Division II. The nickname followed later: the team was still the Dixie State Trailblazers until the university's own name changed, first to Dixie State University's football squad becoming simply the Trailblazers in 2016, then to Utah Tech in 2022.

Since 2020 the club has been climbing again, this time toward Division I. From July 2026 the Trailblazers move on again, into the Big Sky Conference, where they will find Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado on the schedule.

None of that has displaced the fixture that matters most locally: the Battle for the Axe against Southern Utah, the in-state rivalry that predates most of the conference-hopping. Greater Zion Stadium , where St. George plays, holds around 10,500 and was originally raised in 1985 as Hansen Stadium.
