Bobcats

Bozeman sits in the Gallatin Valley, ringed by mountains that draw its winters into ski season and its summers into wheat and cattle country — a college town built around Montana State University, and on autumn Saturdays the town's attention shifts to the football team it has fielded since 1897.

What sets the Bobcats apart from nearly every other program in the country is that they have won a national title at three separate levels of the sport: the NAIA championship in 1956, NCAA Division II in 1976, and Division I-AA — now the FCS — in 1984. No other college football program has managed that spread across divisions. The 1984 title mattered most for what it confirmed: that the Bobcats belonged among the top tier of small-college football, not just the Big Sky Conference also-rans. It took until 2025 for a second FCS championship to arrive, a gap of four decades that Bozeman had waited through Big Sky titles, conference realignments, and a long run of near-misses.

The conference championships tell their own story of consistency rather than dominance — eighteen Big Sky titles stretched from 1964 to 2025, with clusters in the 1960s-70s and again after 2010, suggesting a program that rebuilds rather than collapses. Earlier still, before the Big Sky existed, the Bobcats won five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles between 1938 and 1956, the foundation years when the program first established itself as the team to beat in the region.

Home games are played in front of 17,777 seated fans at Bobcat Stadium, in blue and gold, against a schedule that has run from Big Sky rivals to occasional trips against the likes of Yale. It is a program that started in 1897 as a college football team in a valley town, and more than a century on, that is still what it is.
