«Wolfpack»
North Carolina State University had been standing for only five years when a group of its students put together a football team in 1892. The side settled into red and white and took the name Wolfpack.
The championships came early: three titles in the old South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association, in 1907, 1910 and 1913, then a Southern Conference championship in 1927, where it won the title seven times between 1957 and 1979. Carter–Finley Stadium, built to hold a little over 57,000, has been the team's home since.
Its sharpest run came in the early 1970s, when NC State won the Peach Bowl in 1972 and turned around to take the Liberty Bowl the following year. All of it traces back to the team a handful of students put together five years after the university itself opened its doors.
