Football at Brigham Young University began as one strand of campus life in Provo, Utah, a city built up around the school itself, and it was set apart as a varsity sport in 1896.

The program spent most of the twentieth century as a regional name before a single season changed how it was seen nationally. In 1984, under coach LaVell Edwards, BYU went through its schedule unbeaten and finished the year ranked first in the country, a national championship that still stands as the only one in the club's history. The run through that season is the reference point every later BYU team has been measured against, and it is the reason Edwards' name outlasted his own coaching career.

It sits, in fact, over the stadium itself. BYU plays in Provo at LaVell Edwards Stadium, named for the coach of that 1984 side, a ground built to hold just over 63,000 in the school's colours of white and blue.
