In November 1914, after Arizona beat Occidental College, a reporter covering the game wrote that the team had shown "the fight of wildcats." The name stuck, and the program has carried it since, back to a first season played in 1899 under Stuart Forbes.
The next division crown did not arrive until 2014, and only for the Pac-12 South.
None of that rivalry history means as much locally as the Territorial Cup. Arizona plays for it at Casino Del Sol Stadium, known for most of its life as Arizona Stadium, opened in 1929 and now holding just under 51,000, the conference the Wildcats joined after stints in the WAC and the Pac-12 and its predecessor.
