«Lumberjacks»
The Kiev Bandits ruled Ukrainian American football through the early 2010s, and it was against them that the Uzhhorod Lumberjacks made their name: the 2015 final ended 34–21 to Uzhhorod, and two years later the two sides met again with the Lumberjacks winning 44–30.
The club traces back to 1998, started by a Canadian missionary, Randy Friesen, and a Russian missionary, Alexander Dmitriev, working under an organisation called Cornerstone. That first attempt folded after the 2003 season, and several of its players drifted to a local side called the Warriors; Uzhhorod's American football only returned in 2008. Facilities were rarely settled — the club has trained and played across Spartak Stadium, Avangard, and the grounds of Uzhhorod National University. Between 2013 and 2014 the Lumberjacks even competed in the Hungarian league, taking the Hungarian Bowl in 2013.
Vasiliy Iordan built his name over years in green and black and was named the club's MVP. Danylo Boguslavsky, a three-time champion who went on to work for the club off the field, was killed in action in the Kherson region in October 2022; a street in Uzhhorod now carries his name. Roman Boguslavsky joined the Armed Forces the same year.
The invasion has cut deep into what the Lumberjacks can still do — many of the players are serving in the military.
