New Delhi is a city of ministries. Indian Railways answers to the Railway Sports Promotion Board, which runs sport for the railway system from the capital. The players are scattered along the network. They train and play in railway sports complexes in Secunderabad, Kapurthala, Chennai and Guwahati.
The women's side has made the name count. It holds a record 30 Senior National Championship titles, the latest of them in 2019, after wins in 2016 and 2018. Services and Kerala are the sides that most often stand between the women and another title.
Among those who wore the colours, Anitha Pauldurai is the name that carries furthest outside the sport.
The 75th Senior National Championship gave the club a route beyond India. Winning it put Indian Railways into the FIBA West Asia Super League Final 8 for 2025–2026. The draw there brought Kuwait SC, Al Ittihad and Al Riyadi, clubs from a different basketball tradition, far from the railway complexes of Kapurthala and Guwahati.
The board that sends the team out was set up in 1928, and its offices are still in New Delhi.
