Serie A football returned to Lecce in 2019.

The club took its name from the Salento city it plays in and started life in March 1908 as Sporting Club Lecce. It has been rebuilt more than once since.

The high-water mark in the top flight remains 9th, in 1988/89. That side had Pedro Pablo Pasculli , who had scored for Argentina at the 1986 World Cup and spent the back end of the decade in Puglia, and a young midfielder named Antonio Conte .

Anselmo Bislenghi scored 83 goals in the 1940s. The academy still feeds the first team: Francesco Camarda made his debut at 16.

What the cabinet still does not hold is anything won in Serie A or in the Coppa Italia proper; the two league titles, the Serie C cup of 1975 and the Anglo-Italian semi-professional cup of 1976 are all from a division below.
