Libertad Asunción

Every Libertad season builds toward two dates against Olimpia, and Asunción calls the meeting the Clásico Blanco y Negro. None of Libertad's 26 league titles reads the same without that name attached to the other side of the table.

Those 26 titles span two eras that barely resemble each other. Four came before professionalism reached Paraguay, in 1910, 1917, 1920 and 1930. Then decades passed before another run took hold this century, with championships piling up from 2002 onward almost every other season. In between sat a fall that had never happened to the club before: relegation in 1998, a stretch in the second division, and a return in 2001 that reset everything that followed.

Continentally, Libertad has gone deep without going all the way. Semi-finals in the Copa Libertadores came in 1977 and again in 2006; three more semi-final exits followed in the Copa Sudamericana across 2013, 2017 and 2021. No trophy from either competition sits in the cabinet.

Antony Silva spent long enough between the posts to be spoken of as a club legend outright. Nelson Haedo Valdez took a different route back: he played for Libertad and now manages the side, which is its own kind of return.

Supporters still reach for three nicknames depending on who is talking. Albinegro describes the black-and-white shirt plainly enough. Repollero nods at something older in the club's identity. But Gumarelo is the one that belongs to Libertad and nobody else, the word people use when they mean the club itself rather than just its colours.
