Liège Basket never had to invent a rival. Standard Liège had already claimed the city's basketball identity between 1959 and 1985, winning three Belgian championships, and everything that came after played in that shadow — a club with a cup and two supercups measured against one that had taken the league title outright.
The team started in Fléron, a few kilometres outside the city, founded in 1967 as Fléron Basket Club. Only in 2000, after merging with BC Hannut and Essor Hannut, did it move into Liège itself, and the name kept moving with it: TEC Liège, Dexia Liège, Euphony Liège, betFirst, VOO — a run of sponsor names that tracked the club's finances almost as closely as its results did.
Those results peaked early and briefly. The Belgian Cup came in 2003–04, followed by the Belgian Supercup again in 2009. Nothing after matched it domestically, though in 2024 the club reached the last stage before it disappeared altogether, finishing third in the European North Basketball League.
The end came the same year, and not on the court. Ernie Cambo, the main investor behind Mickael Sports Group, pulled his funding, and Liège Basket was dissolved. The Country Hall Ethias, the arena the club had called home, was left without a top-flight tenant. A successor, CB Liège, grew out of Mailleux Comblain with the specific aim of putting the city back in the sport, and it is due to reach the BNXT League for the 2026–27 season.
