Les Carolos is what people call the inhabitants of Charleroi, and the basketball team carries the word as a second nickname next to Les Spirous, which comes from its own name.

Within seven years of joining the first division, the club won the league, the Belgian Cup and the Supercup in the same year, 1996. The league title then came back in 1997, 1998 and 1999, four in a row. After a gap in which the club still took the Supercup in 2001 and 2002 and the cup in 2002, it won the league and the cup together in 2003, then the league again in 2004.

The longest run came later. From 2008 to 2011 Spirou won the league four years running, and along the way it added the Belgian Cup in 2009 and the Supercup in 2008 and 2010. That made ten league titles in all.

The nearest opponent is Mons-Hainaut. Both clubs are in the Hainaut province of Wallonia, and the meetings are billed as the derby hennuyer. The Spiroudôme, which holds 6,300 and is also known as Le Dôme, is where Charleroi hosts it. The team wears black at home, white away and dark red as a third kit.

The name itself has a short history. The club began in 1988 as Spirou Monceau. Charleroi was added in 1989, when it entered the first division, and the Carolos claimed it from then on.
