The BNXT League operates as a binational professional basketball competition for Belgium and the Netherlands. It emerged from the merger of the Belgian Pro Basketball League and the Dutch Basketball League, creating a unified top-tier structure for both nations. The league distinguishes itself by being a cross-border entity, unlike the purely domestic competitions it replaced, fostering a unified market for basketball in the Benelux region.
The competition features a unified regular season involving 18 to 19 teams, split between Belgian and Dutch clubs. Teams play a double round-robin format within a single table. Starting from the 2024–25 season, the overall BNXT League champion is determined by the team finishing first in the regular season standings, eliminating the previous cross-border final format. However, separate national playoffs are still held to determine the domestic champions for Belgium and the Netherlands, typically in a best-of-5 series. Relegation applies to the last-placed team, who drops to the respective national second tier.
Historically, ZZ Leiden is the most successful club in the BNXT era, having won the title twice. The current champion is Kangoeroes Mechelen. The predecessor leagues had distinct histories, but the focus remains on the current binational structure. The league is currently sponsored by Betfirst, known as the Betfirst BNXT League, though the core brand remains BNXT. This sponsorship adds a commercial layer to the competitive framework, which prioritizes regional integration over national silos. The format ensures that teams from both countries compete for a shared title while maintaining separate domestic titles through the playoff structure. This dual approach balances the need for a regional championship with the tradition of national recognition. The league's structure reflects a modernization of basketball in the region, aiming to increase visibility and competitiveness across borders.
