Locals still call the team Magnitka.

The rivalry that matters most here is with Traktor Chelyabinsk, the South Ural Derby. A quieter one runs against Metallurg Novokuznetsk, another club named for its own combine, in what is known as the Derby of Metallurgs.

Before the KHL existed, Magnitogorsk had already made itself the team to beat in Russian hockey, taking the national title in 1999, 2001 and 2007, and adding two European Hockey League crowns in 1999 and 2000, both won against Sparta Prague. The IIHF European Champions Cup followed in 2008, against SC Bern. Once the KHL began handing out the Gagarin Cup, Magnitogorsk won it three times — in 2014, 2016 and 2024.
