The franchise exists because the NBA wanted back into Wisconsin: the Hawks had left Milwaukee in 1955, and the 1968 expansion side, awarded the city on 22 January of that year. Even the name came from the public — a fan contest drew more than 40,000 entries and settled on a nod to the state's white-tailed deer.

The second one came in 2021, Giannis Antetokounmpo taking Finals MVP against the Suns. Between those two banners the roster ran through Oscar Robertson, Sidney Moncrief, Ray Allen and others enough of them enshrined that the franchise counts six Hall of Famers among its alumni.

Ownership passed in 2014 from Herb Kohl to a group fronted by Wes Edens and Marc Lasry.
