Detroit Pistons

Chuck Daly did not have a superstar tall enough to match the Lakers or the Celtics, so in 1986 he and his captain, Isiah Thomas, built something else. The Bad Boys label stuck, and by 1989 it had a trophy to go with the reputation, then another in 1990, both won in the Detroit Pistons' colours of royal blue, red and chrome.

Before any of that the franchise was not from Detroit at all. It started in 1937 as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, a company team fielded by industrialist Fred Zollner, and did not turn professional until 1941, when it joined the National Basketball League. The move to Detroit came in 1957, two decades after Zollner first put a team on the floor.

No rivalry defined the Bad Boys era like the one with Chicago.

Wallace had already given Detroit its third title in 2004, a very different team from the Bad Boys, with Chauncey Billups taking the Finals MVP award. The championship banners from 1989, 1990 and 2004 hang at Little Caesars Arena now, where the Pistons play in front of crowds of up to 20,332.
