Kaseya Center seats 19,600 and has carried three names since 1999: American Airlines Arena until 2021, FTX Arena until 2023, then the present one. The Heat were one of four expansion sides the NBA granted on 22 April 1987, and they played their first season in 1988–89.

The club's identity is tied to two men in the front office and on the bench. Pat Riley joined in 1995. Erik Spoelstra has been head coach since 2008.

Dwyane Wade is the franchise leader in points, assists and steals, and his shirt was retired in 2020. Alonzo Mourning, the defensive anchor of an earlier era, had his retired in 2019. Jimmy Butler was traded in 2025, and Bam Adebayo is now the player the team is built around.

The Heat have won the NBA title three times: in 2006 against the Dallas Mavericks, in 2012 against the Oklahoma City Thunder and in 2013 against the San Antonio Spurs. They have also met the Boston Celtics in several Eastern Conference Finals since 2010. The Orlando Magic are the local rival, in what is called the Sunshine State Rivalry. Across 26 playoff appearances the club has won 16 division titles.

The two Finals they lost, in 2011 and 2014, were against the same opponents they had beaten for the title.
