Owls

Rice Stadium once held 70,000 seats for a football team that rarely filled a third of them, so in 2006 the university had the end zone sections wrapped in tarps and the capacity quietly reset to 47,000 — an admission, in canvas, of how far the Owls' crowds had drifted from the days when Cotton Bowl trophies came home to Houston. That gap between the stadium built and the stadium needed says something about a program that had its best years early and has spent decades measuring itself against them.

Rice fielded its first team in 1912, not long after the university itself opened, and joined the Southwest Conference as a charter member in 1915. The championships followed in bursts rather than a steady climb: titles in 1934, 1937, 1946, 1949, 1953 and 1957, each one paired with a bowl trip to Dallas or Miami. The 1953 Cotton Bowl win over Alabama, 28–6, sits among those, but it is the 1954 game against Alabama — not part of the honours list here, yet the one still replayed in Houston barbershop talk — that shaped how the Owls are remembered from that era, largely through the players who came out of it, men like Dick Maegle, later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame alongside teammates and coaches including Jess Neely.

The Southwest Conference dissolved in the 1990s, and Rice's next real chapter came in Conference USA, capped by a league title in 2013 under a program rebuilt around a new identity rather than an old one. Bowl wins since then — the Texas Bowl in 2008, the Armed Forces Bowl in 2012, the Hawaii Bowl in 2014 — have been smaller stakes than the Cotton Bowl years but no less contested.

The rivalry that still fills the stadium closest to capacity is the Bayou Bucket Classic against Houston, played in a city where both fan bases live within a few miles of each other and the stadium itself sits inside the Rice campus, blue and grey against the Houston skyline.
