The Regionalliga Süd title Darmstadt won in 2011 was a fourth-division championship. Four years later the same club finished second in the 2. Bundesliga and went up to the top flight. They stayed two seasons, 2015/16 and 2016/17, and came back down.

An earlier generation had won the same Regionalliga Süd in 1972/73, when the name still meant the second division. That side, and its successors, took the 2. Bundesliga title twice, in 1977/78 and again in 1980/81.

The pattern repeated in 2022/23. Second place in the 2. Bundesliga returned Darmstadt to the Bundesliga for 2023/24.

The club took its present name in 1919, having been founded in May 1898 as FC Olympia Darmstadt. Between the promotions and relegations there is a steadier record close to home: the Hessen Cup , won in 1966 and then repeatedly after 1999, including three seasons in a row from 2006. Those years overlapped with long spells in the lower divisions, which is where the competition mattered most.

The nickname is Die Lilien — the Lilies — and the colours are blue and white. Home is the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor , a ground the city shortens to the Bölle.
