Twice in Bangkok, in 2019 and again this year, Thailand came within one game of a first SEA Games gold, and both times the Philippines stood in the way. That has been the pattern of the modern era: silver in 2013, 2017, 2019 and 2025, bronze in 2015, 2022 and 2023, a team that keeps reaching the final without quite closing it out.

The team's own history goes back further than that run. It first appeared at the ABC Championship for Women in 1968, finishing fourth, and returned four years later to beat Indonesia 70–54 in the third-place match — still the best finish Thailand has managed at that tournament, now rebranded as the FIBA Women's Asia Cup. A more recent bronze came in 2023, when Thailand hosted the Women's Asia Cup Division B in Bangkok and beat Jordan 66–52 for third place after a semi-final loss to Indonesia.

Continental competition has been harder going. At the Asian Games, Thailand's best finish in the main basketball event remains fourth, from Bangkok in 1978, and the team has never medalled there since.

The 2019 SEA Games squad gave some sense of how the roster is built: alongside players such as Penphan Yothanan and Supavadee Kunchuan, Thailand fielded the naturalised guard Tiffany Bias.

Home games are shared out across Bangkok rather than tied to one arena, and the tournaments that matter most tend to end up at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani, a 12,000-seat hall that has hosted the team in its national colours of red, white and blue.
