Indonesia's women reached Division A of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup in 2023, after winning Division B that year, and the squad they took to Cambodia the same season came home with an outright SEA Games gold. Three silvers, in 1991, 2015 and 2021, had marked how close the team kept coming; a run of bronzes stretching from 1979 to 2025 showed how rarely it slipped out of medal contention altogether. The 2023 final under coach Lin Chi-Wen broke that pattern.

The team trains and plays smaller fixtures at GOR CLS Kertajaya in Surabaya, a hall built for a few thousand, and moves to Jakarta's larger arenas for the games that draw a crowd. Red and white carry through the kit, and in local coverage the side goes by Srikandi rather than any football-borrowed nickname.

Thailand remains the fixture that decides most regional finals, with the Philippines the other side Indonesia measures itself against most often. Against that backdrop, Kimberley Pierre-Louis, a naturalised forward, topped the scoring at the 2022 Asian Games, where the team finished fifth — its best showing yet in that competition.
