The women's game in South Korea took shape through the Korea Basketball Association's early push to compete internationally, and by the mid-1960s the national side was already on the floor at global level, finishing eighth at the 1964 World Championship before winning the inaugural Asian championship the following year. That result set a pattern that held for decades: South Korea and China traded the region's top spot for most of the next thirty years, with Seoul's team collecting twelve continental titles between 1965 and 2007 and finishing runner-up on eleven further occasions. The team plays as Yeorang, the tigress, in white at home and black away, both trimmed with the blue that runs through the national colours.

The high point outside Asia came in 1984, when South Korea reached the Olympic final in Los Angeles and left with silver, a result matched only by two runner-up finishes at the World Championship in 1967 and 1979. Continental gold proved harder to repeat at the Asian Games, where a single title from 1978 sits alongside a long run of second-place finishes stretching into the 1990s and 2000s.

Byeon Yeon-ha's number was retired by KB Stars after a career that included Asian Games gold in 2014, the same tournament where Park Hye-jin was named the competition's most valuable player. More recently, Park Ji-soo has carried the team's inside game, taking Asian Games bronze in 2022 after being named the domestic league's MVP that year. The rivalry with Japan has sharpened as China's grip on the region has loosened, and South Korea's bronze finishes in 2014 and 2022 suggest a team now fighting from a step back rather than defending a lead, with the next continental cycle the immediate measure of whether that slide has been arrested.
