The Palais des Sports Salamatou Maïga in Bamako holds 5,000 people. The arena went up in 2015, well after the side had already made its name on the continent.

That history runs back to 1968, when Les Aigles Dames took bronze at the first Africa Championship for Women they entered. The high point came almost forty years later, in 2007, when Mali beat Senegal 63–56 in the final to win the AfroBasket Women title, with Hamchétou Maïga-Ba named MVP of the tournament. She had already won a WNBA title with the Sacramento Monarchs and later returned to the setup as an assistant coach.

Mali has not managed to repeat that 2007 win, but it has refused to fall away from the continent's top table: runner-up finishes in 2009, 2021 and 2025, bronze in 2011, 2017, 2019 and 2023. Senegal remains the team it measures itself against above all. Beyond Africa, Mali reached the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and has twice played at the FIBA Women's World Cup, most recently in 2022, with a place already secured for the 2026 edition.
