Germany Women

Their opener at the 2026 World Cup fell to Spain.

They came into the international game late and lost early — the first cap ended 14–69 against Yugoslavia at the 1954 EuroBasket in Belgrade. The closest they have come to a major medal since is bronze at EuroBasket Women 1997 in Hungary, beating the hosts 86–61 for third place. Hosting the World Cup in 1998 brought them to 11th, their best showing at that event, and Paris 2024 brought a first Olympic appearance in the format at all, finishing 7th.

The medal that does hang on the wall came from a different discipline entirely: the 3x3 team took gold at those same Paris Games, beating Spain 17–16 in a final that gave German basketball, women's or men's, its first Olympic medal of any kind. It is Marie Gülich, now captaining the side out of Los Angeles, and Leonie Fiebich, established at the New York Liberty, who carry the current squad's weight in the WNBA. Helga Nowitzki once wore the same shirt for West Germany.

None of it traces back to a fixed home.
