Turkey Women

Nevriye Yılmaz was the first Turkish woman to play in the WNBA, and she captained the side through the two tournaments by which it is still measured: the silver medal at EuroBasket Women 2011 and the bronze in 2013.

The federation dates the team's history to a first official match on 12 September 1964, against West Germany in Munich, though Turkey had already appeared at EuroBasket Women as early as 1950, finishing eighth. Aylin Yıldızoğlu belongs to both eras of that build-up: a player in the team's formative years, she was also the head coach who took the side through the 2014 World Cup run.

Serbia and Greece remain the fixtures that matter most, Greece through recurring qualifier and group-stage meetings, Serbia through those two knockout results. Domestically the side trains and plays at the Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi in Istanbul, a 10,000-capacity arena.

Regional competition has been kinder than continental or global finals: gold at the 2005 Mediterranean Games, silver again in 2022. An Olympic medal has not followed — the closest the team has come is fifth place, at London 2012.
