The gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games remains the high point for Puerto Rico's women, the one tournament where the run went all the way to the top of the podium rather than stopping short of it, as it has everywhere else. A decade later the side reached another final, at the 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, and came away with silver, while bronze medals from the 1995 and 2017 FIBA Americas Championships mark the other times the team stood on the podium without quite winning it outright.

Puerto Rico plays under the Federación de Baloncesto de Puerto Rico, founded in 1930, though the national side itself dates to 1948. Players and supporters call the team Las 12 Guerreras, and it carries white at home, red away. The roster has been built around captain Pamela Rosado, with Arella Guirantes, a WNBA draft pick, giving the squad a name recognisable outside the island's own leagues.

What set the 2020s apart was a door that had never opened before: Puerto Rico reached the Olympic Games for the first time, at Tokyo, then did it again in Paris in 2024. Between those two appearances came a quarter-final at the 2022 FIBA Women's World Cup, the deepest the team has gone at that event. None of that was won cheaply against the Dominican Republic, the opponent Puerto Rico meets most often in a fixture treated on the island as a derby, sharpened further whenever the two sides meet at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Home games are played at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, though for the biggest nights the federation moves across the city to the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot, which holds roughly 19,500 against the Clemente's 12,500.
