That habit goes back further than any of its current players. The women's national team first took the floor on 8 March 1953 in Santiago, beating Paraguay 60–28 under head coach John L. Head, at the inaugural FIBA World Championship for Women.

Eleven world championships have followed, the most recent in 2022, alongside a run of Olympic gold that stretches from 1984 to 2024 without a single gap wider than four years — interrupted only by a bronze in 1976, back when the tournament was still new to women's basketball.

The team travels without a fixed home floor, playing wherever the tournament sends it, though its players train and report in at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. That is an administrative base rather than a stadium with a story attached, which is why it rarely comes up when the team is discussed.

What has held constant across generations of rosters — Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie giving way to Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings, then to Breanna Stewart and Taurasi herself — is who keeps them honest on the podium. Australia has pushed the closest for two decades, and France ended a run of Olympic finals against the Americans before losing the rematch. Spain has done the same at World Cup level. None of the three has yet turned a good tournament into a title against them.
