Sixty-two to sixty-one against the Czech Republic decided the 2023 EuroBasket quarter-final, the kind of finish that has become familiar whenever Hungary and the Czechs meet in a tournament that matters. That single point carried a team still built around Dorka Juhász, who plays her club basketball for the Minnesota Lynx and Galatasaray, through to a round few outside the region expected them to reach.

The national side traces its FIBA membership back to 1935 and played its first international match in 1942, but it counts its founding from 1950, the year it hosted EuroBasket Women in Budapest and left with silver. A second silver followed in 1956, then a run of bronzes stretched across three decades — 1952, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1991, the last of them featuring Hajnalka Balázs. An Olympic appearance came once, in Moscow in 1980, where Hungary finished fourth.

There is no single ground to call home. Qualifiers move between the DVTK Aréna in Miskolc, Savaria Hall in Sopron and the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena, a rotation that owes more to scheduling than to any tradition. Under head coach Péter Völgyi, the squad now mixes homegrown talent with naturalised guards Allie Quigley and Courtney Vandersloot, and has booked its place at the 2026 World Cup in Berlin.

The edge still runs through the Czech Republic and, close behind, Slovakia — the two opponents Hungary measures itself against whenever a EuroBasket draw is made, the history between them adding weight to matches that might otherwise be routine.
