Japan has been the constant in this rivalry: the two teams have crossed paths repeatedly at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup and the Asian Games. China have usually had the better of it, taking the Asia Cup twelve times, most recently in 2023.

The national side, formed in 1974 and affiliated to FIBA that same year, is run out of Beijing by the Chinese Basketball Association, with qualifiers and tournaments rotating through cities such as Wuhan, Shenzhen and Chengdu.

Continental dominance has not always translated at world level, though it has come close. China took silver at the 1994 World Cup, losing to Brazil, and matched that finish in 2022, this time undone by the United States. A bronze medal followed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where they beat Russia for third place. Zheng Haixia was named MVP of that 1994 World Cup and later became the first Chinese player inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame.

At the Asian Games, where basketball has often served as the clearest measure of regional strength, China have taken gold seven times, most recently in 2022, with the rivalry against Japan surfacing again and again on the way there.
