Every meeting with New Zealand carries its own name, the Trans-Tasman Throwdown. The wider test has always come from further afield, from the United States.

That breakthrough came instead at a World Championship, in 2006, when Australia beat the field outright and Penny Taylor was named the tournament's most valuable player. Silver followed at the 2018 World Cup, and bronze on four other occasions. The Olympic record: three silvers, in 2000, 2004 and 2008, and three bronzes, the most recent in 2024. Gold at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup did not arrive until 2025, the team's first, after silver in 2017 and three bronzes in between.

Lauren Jackson's name runs through most of that record, five Olympic appearances and a WNBA MVP award attached to it, and Suzy Batkovic's six WNBL MVP titles. The gold jersey and green alternate strip, worn since the team adopted the Opals nickname in 1994 in honour of the national gemstone, have travelled between Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena, Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena and Perth's RAC Arena, the side never settling on one home ground. It began, in October 1957, with a first game against the Soviet Union at the World Championship in Brazil.
