About

Panam Sports runs the women’s basketball tournament at the Pan American Games, a quadrennial multi-sport event for teams from the Americas. It differs from the FIBA AmeriCup Women because it is a broader continental gathering rather than a dedicated basketball championship. The tournament sits outside the domestic pyramid and carries higher national prestige with direct Olympic qualification ties.

The format features eight teams split into two groups of four. After group play, the competition moves to knockout semifinals, a bronze medal match, and a final. There is no promotion or relegation. Participation is determined by qualification through regional championships like the FIBA AmeriCup Women or Centrobasket, alongside automatic qualification for the host nation. The current season includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico.

Brazil is the current champion after defeating Colombia in the 2023 final in Santiago. The United States holds the record for most gold medals with seven wins, followed by Brazil with five. Cuba has claimed three titles, while Puerto Rico and Canada have won once each. Canada’s 2015 victory over the USA marked their first gold. The tournament was first held in 1955 in Mexico City, though regular participation began in 1959. It was notably not held in 1995 due to a lack of participating teams. Notable reforms include the introduction of 3x3 basketball in 2019. The next edition will be held in Lima, Peru, in 2027.
